Who is Rita?

Rita Williamson is an Essex girl who moved north to the Cumbrian fells in 1995 and shortly thereafter fell in love with belly dance.

I am self-employed as a dressmaker, tutor and writer.

What do I sew?   These days I mostly sew belly dance costumes, but I still turn out the occasional prom dress or spot of bridal wear.

MY book, to be found on ebay and remainder shops everywhere.

What  do I write?  In my time I have written (and published) dozens of romantic short stories.  I even wrote a book on planning and preparing for your wedding*.  Nowadays I write lesson plans and articles on belly dancing and teaching.

I teach belly dance and sewing in Penrith and villages in the Eden Valley in Cumbria.

When not working, gardening or ignoring the housework, I dabble in a variety of crafts from salt dough modelling to silk painting.  I am a regular speaker at local WI’s and women’s groups on subjects which include wedding superstitions, public speaking and belly dancing.

The world according to Rita

  • Life’s too short to iron.

  • No sequin is too large.

  • Dancing is IMPORTANT.
